Magnificent 19th-century palace!

Since I adore 19th-century castles, I just had to make a stop at the Pena Palace. I loved exploring each section. I used the audio guide for the whole visit, which was full of helpful information. The part about the Manueline style, which originated right here in Portugal, was my favorite. As the audio guide pointed out, this is especially reflected in the maritime motifs. I feel like I learned a lot on this audio tour, and I recommend booking the Pena Palace Ticket With Audio Guide.

The pleasure of visiting the Pena Palace

I had the pleasure of visiting the Pena Palace and admiring its eccentric features. The place looks like something out of a fairytale or a fantasy movie. Somehow all the various pieces blend into a unique mix and give character to the palace. I found lots of photo spots that are perfect for my social media profiles. Thanks to the audio guide, I also learned a lot about history and art, so I don't feel guilty for snapping tons of photos for my IG. The Pena Palace Park was also worth the ticket; it was refreshing to walk in nature after visiting inside.

ENTERING THE COLORFUL PALACE OF PENA

After you show your email voucher at the entrance, step inside the premises of the wonderful Pena Palace. Don't forget to turn on your audio guide! As you enter, notice the elaborate stone carvings and decorations of the guardhouse, especially the intricate design of the azulejos tiles. Next, head to the Triton's Gate, which is adorned with a bas-relief of the sea god Triton. Did you know this motif was chosen by King Ferdinand II himself? As the monarch of a proud seafaring nation, King Ferdinand II made sure the entire Palace of Pena was covered with maritime symbols.

ADMIRE THE RICHLY DECORATED INTERIOR

Step inside the Pena Palace and arrive at the richly decorated Inner Courtyard. This is a good starting point as you'll have easy access to all other parts of the palace. You might start by visiting the State Rooms, official halls in which the king would welcome his ministers and foreign dignitaries. Marvel at the Great Hall's high ceilings and lavishly decorated chandeliers. Then, enter the Noble Hall and get a sense of the grandeur of the Palace of Pena.

TAKE A PEEK INSIDE THE ROYAL PENA APARTMENTS

As you'll see on the self-guided audio tour, each of the rooms in the Royal Apartments is decorated in a different style. One of the highlights is the Arabic Room, which borrows heavily from Islamic architectural aesthetics. By listening to the audio guide, you will learn about King Ferdinand's artistic tastes and 19th-century architectural fashion.

PENA PALACE - ECLECTIC MIX OF INFLUENCES

You’ll be able to see various architectural styles while exploring Pena Palace. The towers and exterior showcase Gothic style, while the Manueline style is prominent in the Chapel of Our Lady of Pena. The interior rooms are designed in Renaissance and Moorish Revival styles. Learn all about the eclectic styles of the Pena Palace with the help of our audio guide!

EXPLORING THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CHARMING PARK

During your audio tour, step outside the Pena Palace and into the park, where you can enjoy a relaxing stroll. Pick a route and admire the scenery as you pass by lakes, fountains, and lush vegetation full of exotic plants. Be sure to find the Chalet of the Countess of Edla, a rustic cottage used as a royal retreat. King Ferdinand II commissioned it for his second wife, Elise Hensler, an Austrian actress, who was proclaimed a countess just before their marriage.

Why is the Pena Palace painted in such vibrant colors?

As you'll learn through your audio guide, the vibrant colors of the Pena Palace reflect King Ferdinand II's artistic vision. He was a talented painter and a patron of the arts with numerous architectural contributions seen all over the Pena Palace. This includes his choice of vibrant colors for the exterior. King Ferdinand II believed that yellow and red were the most effective way to contrast the lush nature of the Sintra mountains. This made the Palace of Pena stand out not only against the backdrop of vegetation but among other European palaces of the 19th century.
