This was a great tour! Big thank you to our guide for an interesting tour and for making our visit even better! I loved the strange and unique architecture of the place, it's definitely worth it to come and explore. I also loved learning about the king and queen who built the palace from our guide. Highly recommended!!!
My wife and I really enjoyed this tour! Our guide was friendly, spoke English well, and explained everything we saw. The palace was stunning, especially the views from the parapets and the terraces. We could see all the way to the ocean and took great photos. I also really loved walking around the gardens, it was relaxing, and there was plenty of shade!

BEFORE PENA PALACE WAS A PALACE
Hear the history of Pena Palace from your expert tour guide! Pena Palace history starts in the 12th century, when there was a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena there. King Manuel I had a monastery built, but it was badly damaged in an earthquake in the 18th century. Still, the monastery was active, and only abandoned about 80 years later after the decision to abolish religious orders in the country.
FERDINAND II BUYS THE LAND
Hear stories about the interesting King-Artist, which is how Ferdinand II came to be known in Portugal. He was an artist, art collector and sponsor, and the person responsible for giving Pena Palace its unique look, which you will see on the tour. Queen Maria II married him in 1836. Ferdinand was fascinated by the 16-century monastery on top of a hill, influenced by the romantic ideas of the time period. Pena Palace incorporates elements according to medieval ideas, such as lookout towers, a drawbridge and an access tunnel. There are also Manueline and Moorish elements. See the colorful Hispano-Mudéjar tiles on the walls in the Manueline cloister, the royal chambers, the Queen's Office, the Great Hall, and more. Enjoy stunning views from the Queen's Terrace, where you can see Lisbon on one side, and the ocean on the other. From the terrace, you can see the High Cross, originally from the 16th century. Two of them were damaged, so a new one was carved in 2008. It stands on the highest point in Sintra Hills. Pena Palace also has parapet paths, which make it possible to watch the surroundings, as it was built as a fantasy castle inspired by medieval castles.
WALK AROUND THE BEAUTIFUL PENA PARK
The King-Artist also commissioned the design of the gardens. See the High Cross, the Temple of Columns, the Queen's Fern Valley, the Grotto of the Monk, the Little Birds Fountain, and more. The Grotto of the Monk is where the monks from the monastery went into a secluded retreat after the abolition of religious orders. The king even planted trees from every continent, making Pena Park the most important arboretum in Portugal!
